The West Bengal cabinet today cleared a project to set up a centre for rehabilitation of destitute girl children in the state.

Elaborating the project, state Parliamentary Affairs and Higher Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said the centre would come up under the scheme 'Muktir Alo' over a 21.59 cottah plot sanctioned by the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) in New Town, a satellite township in eastern fringes of the metropolis.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who wanted to upgrade the status of girl children and women in the state, was keen on undertaking the initiative, Chatterjee said.

Details of the project would be worked out soon in consultation with the departments concerned, he added.
