The Bhagalpur Riots Probe Commission today submitted its report to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The Chairman of the panel Justice (Retd) N N Singh met the CM and handed over the report to him, Principal Secretary, Home, Amir Subhani said in a statement.

Subhani, who was present during report submission, said the government would initiate necessary steps after studying the report.

Soon after coming to power in November 2005, Nitish Kumar had set up an inquiry commission under Justice (retired) N N Singh to probe the 1989 communal Bhagalpur riots, which claimed over 1,000 lives and left in its wake a trail of devastation.

Kumar had appointed the probe panel in February 2006 in view of state Cabinet decision to get 27 cases of the communal riots re-investigated to bring the guilty to justice and punish the officials responsible for their acquittal, despite substantial evidences against them.

The panel was tasked to look into suggestions and recommendations made by previous Justice (Retd) R N Prasad commission on Bhagalpur riots instituted during the past RJD government.
