Engineering solutions provider Bharat Forge has set up an ordnance equipment factory in Pune to manufacture barrels, breech, muzzle brake for artillery systems and tanks like the T-72, T-90 and Arjun.

The facility was inaugurated on October 1 by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, the company said in a statement issued here today.

"We have been at the forefront in establishing a vibrant defence industrial base in the country. In the past few years, we have invested sizeable resources to develop a wide range of products and technological capabilities to manufacture various critical items of defence systems, equipment and components," Bharat Forge Chairman and Managing Director B N Kalyani said.

The objective is to help the country reduce its dependence on imports and save precious foreign exchange through large scale indigenisation, he added.

This plant allows manufacturing of complete ordnance, including barrels, breech, muzzle brake for artillery systems and tanks like the T-72, T-90 and Arjun.

"Manufacturing of artillery guns is a highly complex science which involves cross disciplinary architecture, robust design and engineering capability and intensive knowledge of complex materials, with a solid foundation in metallurgy which forms the backbone of this capability," Kalyani said, adding the company has invested heavily to create a manufacturing ecosystem for the artillery systems.
