The federation of former students of Bharathiar University here today urged the district administration to take steps to cancel the appointments made during the tenure of Vice-Chancellor A Ganapathy, who was arrested on graft charges.

In a memorandum to the District Collector, they stated that they had already petitioned ministers and government officials concerned, regarding the irregularities in appointment of professors and staff, but to no avail.

The arrest of Ganapathy has proved their charges and in view of this, the appointments made by him should be immediately cancelled and those with merit be nominated, they said.

Stringent action should be taken against those in HR department and also in Syndicate after carrying out detailed inquiry about their roles in the appointment, the memorandum said.

Ganapathi was on February 3 arrested for allegedly accepting Rs 30 lakh as bribe from an aspirant for the post of an assistant professor.

Dharmaraj, a professor at the University was also arrested for allegedly brokering the deal.

The duo were remanded to judicial custody till February 16, by a special court here yesterday.
