Police today claimed to have cracked the double murder case of a call centre employee and her minor daughter in Bhayandar by arresting her 22-year-old colleague with whom she was in a relationship, police said.

Dipika Sanghvi (29) and her daughter Hetal (8) were found murdered in their flat last week. According to police, the duo were murdered on January 25, but the matter came to light after neighbours complained of foul smell emanating from the flat.

The accused, identified as Vinayak Apur, was arrested from Dahisar in Thane district, said Superintendent of Police (Rural) Mahesh Patil.

He said Dipika, who was living separately from her husband, was in relationship with Apur, her colleague in the Dahisar-based call centre.

On the motive behind the murder, Patil said Dipika used to threaten Apur that she would file a rape case against him if he doesn't pay her money.

"Her husband Kartik used to give her Rs 7,000 towards monthly expenses. He was aware about the affair between Dipika and her boyfriend," the officer said.

Narrating the sequence of event, Patil said Dipika and Apur had had a heated argument on January 25, following which he hit her with a heavy and blunt object on her head and strangulated her.

"Hetal who was sleeping in next room woke up after hearing the commotion and witnessed the incident. However, Apur also strangled her and wrapped her body in bed before covering it with a bed sheet," the SP said.

To avoid suspicion, he didn't leave the place immediately but stayed there for at least a day.

"However, he was caught on CCTV while exiting the building. In meantime, he went to Goa and from there to Shirdi before returning to Dahisar," he said.
