BHU assistant professor commits suicide

An Assistant Professor of Banaras Hindu University allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan after her engagement, which was scheduled for next month, was cancelled, police said.

Swati Pandey, who had recently joined the History Department, was reportedly depressed after her engagement was called off on Sunday, Ajit Mishra, SHO ofBhelupur police station, said.

She "committed suicide" in her house in Janki Nagar Colony and her body was found this morning by her family members, Mishra said.

In a "suicide note", Swati said she was taking the extreme step as her engagement, scheduled for May 9, was cancelled, the SHO said.
 

The body has been sent for postmortem andan FIR registered in the case, he said.

Further probe into the case is underway, he added.
