Eminent scholar Naren Kalita recalled that Bronson wrote the first Assamese dictionary and relentlessly struggled for 37 years to establish Assamese as a separate language and not a part of Bengali.
Speaking at a function yesterday in Nagaon Mission School, which Bronson established in 1842, Kalita spoke about the contribution of the American missionary and his colleague Nathan Brown for protecting the existence of Assamese language.
Pastor of Guwahati Baptist Mandali, Azizul Haque, said Miles Bronson worked for education, specially of women, development of culture, literature and social reforms.
"Now we are fighting to establish that the Assamese script is an independent script and is not Bengali script. In this fight Miles Bronson is our source of inspiration", Pastor Haque observed.
