An attempt to loot a cooperative credit society here was made but the culprits aborted it after being unable to break the safety locker containing Rs 3.30 crore worth pledged jewels besides cash, police said today.

The door of the Primary Agricultural Cooperative credit Society and the strong room where the locker was kept were found broke open when its employees turned up for duty in the morning.

However, the locker in which jewels and cash had been kept was intact, police said adding the culprits could not break it and apparently fled the place, abandoning a gas cylinder and welding and cutting machines they had brought.

Quoting society officials, police said jewels worth Rs. 3.30 crore and cash to the tune of Rs. two lakh were in the safe.

CCTV cameras and an alarm equipment in the premises were found smashed.

There was a night watchman at the society and investigations were on to find out how the robbers had gained entry without his notice.
