Police today foiled an attempt to picket the Neyveli Lignite Corporation's second mine here by residents of some villages demanding alternative house sites for those whose lands are being acquired for an expansion project of the public sector major.
Police said a number of people, including 200 women, from Thandavakuppam and nearby villages gathered near the mine along with activists of political parties led by Bhuvanagiri MLA A. Saravanan to press their demand.
However, they were prevented from approaching the mine and dispersed, police said.
Later vridhachalam Revenue Divisional Officer Senthilkumar and NLC officials held talks with a group of representatives of the protesters. As the talks remained inconclusive, another round has been scheduled on October 6, officials said.
