Bid to smuggle 15 kg gold worth Rs 4.2 cr foiled

In a major haul, customs officials today seized 15 kg of gold worth about Rs 4.2 crore allegedly smuggled from Sri Lanka and arrested six fishermen, including a Lankan national, near here.

Acting on a tip-off, customs officials checked a boat off Kannirajapuram near Sayalkudi in the distict and found the gold kept hidden underneath the diesel cans, police said.

Six occupants of the boat, including a Sri Lankan national, were arrested and taken to Tuticorin Customs office for further investigations, they added.
