Customs sleuths at the international airport here today foiled a bid to smuggle gold concealed in the form of a compound in sole pads of the footwear worn by a passenger who arrived from Doha.
A search of his baggage on suspicion led to the seizure of two brown coloured sole pads which prima facie appear to contain gold, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said in a release here.
He said the sole pads totally weighing 1,262 grams had been sent to the Customs laboratory for gold extraction.
Of late, the smugglers have been adopting ingenious methods to smuggle gold, the official said.
