Eight tonnes of rice, meant for distribution through public distribution system (PDS) outlets, which was being smuggled to Kerala, was seized by Revenue officials and police personnel at Kaliayakavai here following a hot chase.

During a check of vehicles late last night following specific information that rice was being smuggled to neighbouring Kerala, officials signalled a lorry to stop, which the driver did not heed.

After a chase for nearly 15 kms, the officials managed to stop the lorry at Kaliayakavai and eight tonnes of rice was found.

The driver of the container-lorry managed to escape, police personnel attached to the Food Cell said adding the rice was handed over to Kaapukaadu godown.
