An unemployed engineer's bid to take revenge on his in-laws by sending an SMS to Delhi Police that slain LTTE leader Prabhakaran's wife is staying at their residence here landed him in jail after a police search found the information to be false.

Police said the 32-year-old man was irked at his in-laws not giving him an appointment letter from an engineering college in Karur and shot off an SMS to Delhi Police that Prabhakaran's wife was staying at their residence in Kitchipalayam area and was planning to escape.

Delhi Police alerted their counterparts here, who went to the residence and conducted enquiries, only to find the information was false. His wife was staying with her parents as she was in the family way, they said.

Police said they tracked him by monitoring his cell phone and e-mail usage and nabbed him yesterday. On being questioned, he said he had sent the SMS to take revenge on his in-laws, they said.

A case was registered against him under Section 182 IPC (false information with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person) and 62 A of the IT ACT.

He was produced before the judicial magistrate here today and remanded to 15 days custody, they said.
