The Bihar government is actively considering to declare house sparrow as the state bird for its protection and conservation.

A proposal to this effect is under active consideration, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said in reply to a short notice question of BJP MLC Baidyanath Prasad in legislative council.

Modi, who also holds the forest portfolio, said due to growing of towns has made it difficult for sparrows to make their nest.

Considering the problem, the state government was encouraging plantation of mango, mahua and sakhua trees on which sparrows could make their shelter, he said.

A separate plan is also been thought for conservation and preservation of sparrows in Bihar, Modi added.

Bihar celebrates March 20 as "Sparrow day" every year.

According to experts, installation of large numbers of mobile towers was a major factor for dwindling population of the birds in the state.
