A 24-year-old man, hailing from Bihar, died today after an accidental fall at a power plant here, following which around 1,000 labourers abstained from work in protest, police said.

The victim, identified as Krishna Shah, was a contract labourer working at the site of NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited, an under construction thermal power plant, for the past one year.

"He seems to have accidentally fallen down approximately seven metres below from where he was working," M Durai, Superintendent of Police, Tuticorin District told PTI, adding, Shah later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

The labourer was assigned to the turbine erection unit at the 2x500 MW thermal power plant and he fell when he tried to come out of the site after finishing his work, he said, adding, the incident occurred at around 3 am.

Other contract workers working at the plant refused to go ahead with their work in protest of the incident, police said, adding, they are likely to resume work tomorrow.

"We have deployed sufficient police personnel at the site to prevent untoward incidents," Durai said.

This is the second mishap at the site. A few months ago, another labourer died after he tripped and fell from a chimney.
