The police-public ratio in Bihar will soon be 125 policemen per one lakh people following the recruitment of 45,000 constables which is under process, state Water Resources Department minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said today.
"We have started the recruitment process for 45,000 constables, which will augment the police-public ratio to 125 soon as against the national average of 138," Chaudhary informed the legislative Assembly, while replying to a debate on the home department's budgetary demand of Rs 6179.04 crore for 2015-16.
Launching a counter-attack on the opposition BJP over its charge of prevalence of "Jungle Raj-2" in Bihar ever since the ruling JD(U) took the RJD's support to run the government, he said the fact of the matter was the growth of cognisance offences in Bihar stood much lower at 166.3 per lakh people against national the average of 215.5 as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.
The rate of cognisable crimes under the state and special law stood at 17.4 per one lakh population against the national average at 324.9, Chaudhary said quoting the NCRB data published in 2013 that Bihar figured much lower than the national figure of rape at 2.32 per one lakh women against national average at 4.69, while crimes against women stood at 28 per one lakh women in the state against the national average at 52.24.
