Sniffer dogs in Bihar are becoming "overweight" on account of inadequate activity and stodgy food, a top police official said here today.
Additional Director General of Police, CID, Vinay Kumar said that while sniffer dogs have been immensely helpful in cases involving explosives, their utilisation has been sub-optimal in cases of economic offences which have witnessed a steep rise in recent times.
"Our sniffer dogs are becoming overweight as they get a rich diet but not adequate physical activity. Underutilisation of dog squads is seen in investigation of cases like economic offences, the incidence of which has witnessed an unprecedented increase in recent times," Kumar told reporters here.
In reply to a query, the ADGP said he came to know that the sniffer dogs are not being utilised properly at a review meeting in Bhagalpur.
Sniffer dogs had been useful in the detection of explosive material and collection of scientific evidence last year. "But due to inadequate utilisation of dog squads at the district level, collection of evidence becomes difficult in other crimes like economic offences," he added.
The proper and effective use of the dog squad would help the police improve its investigation, Kumar added.
