Areas surrounding India Gate in the high-security New Delhi area witnessed a chaotic night early today as around 40 bikers performed dangerous stunts, disrupting traffic and causing distress to commuters.

Acting on a phone call about the ruckus at around 1:00 AM, police carried out a checking drive when nine bikers were penalized and four motorcycles impounded. They were booked under Motor Vehicle Act.

"A total of 288 vehicles, including 36 cabs and 237 bikes, were checked. We have challaned nine bikers and impounded four motorcycles," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) S B S Tyagi.

The rowdy bikers mainly created a ruckus on Tilak Marg, Hanuman Road and Akbar Road.

The bikers misbehaved with occupants of several vehicles.

In July last year, a 19-year-old boy was killed and his friend wounded when police opened fire on a group of bikers performing dangerous stunts in New Delhi district. The incident had caused uproar with the victim's family demanding a stern action against the policeman who had opened fire.
