"A solid waste management policy is being drafted to deal with the problem of dumping garbage along the roadside and a bill will soon be brought in imposing a ban on littering and spitting on roads and public places," Chief Secretary Alok Kumar Jain said while chairing a meeting with officials to discuss sanitation.

He directed the officials attending the meeting to identify places of tourist interest on a priority basis and make comprehensive arrangements of solid waste management.

A blueprint has been drafted to launch a cleanliness awareness campaign involving different sections including NGOs and local sanitation committees, Secretary Urban Development M H Khan said.

Uttarakhand produces about 752 tonnes of solid waste every day.
