The Meghalaya government today introduced a Bill for setting up special courts throughout the state for ensuring speedy trial.

The Meghalaya Special Courts Bill 2014 was introduced by Deputy Chief Minister, in-charge of Law, Rowell Lyngdoh during the re-assembled budget session in the Assembly.

The statement of object and reasons of the Bill said that it had become necessary to have special courts to deal with cases exclusively allotted to it for speedy trial as normal courts were overburdened.

"A law is required in this regard so as to have more courts to provide fast track trials in cases and the crimes are nipped in the bud," the Bill stated.

It came in the wake of the brutal killing of a woman by Garo National Liberation Army militant in South Garo Hills District last week.
