Senior working president of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Bindo M Lanong will lead the party till the general council of the party in September, party officials said on Friday.
Assembly Speaker and United Democratic Party president Donkupar Roy passed away on July 28 at a private hospital in Delhi following a brief illness.
UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said, "By virtue of him (Bindo) being the senior working president of the party, he will continue to lead the party till the new office bearers are elected in the general council."
The general council of the party will be held on September 11 here.
The party, with eight MLAs in the House of 60, is the biggest regional party supporting the BJP-backed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance led by the National People's Party.
Meanwhile, the central executive committee of the party has put forth its claim for the post of Speaker.
"The Speaker post should go to the UDP again," Lanong said.
