In a rare case, a woman infected with the H5N6 virus that causes bird flu has given birth to a healthy child in south China's Guangdong province.

The 40-year-old mother in Zhaoqing city was diagnosed with H5N6 avian flu when she was 35 weeks pregnant.

She gave birth to a healthy child on December 29 and is still in critical condition due to a cesarean section and lung infection, Zhong Jiali, spokesperson of the hospital told state-run Xinhua news agency.

Doctors have asked all close contacts of the woman to take Tamiflu, an anti-viral drug for flu, as a preventive measure.
