The arrested person was identified as Narendra Swain of Tatilagotha patna, Divisional Forest Official, Chilika Wildlife Division, B P Acharya said.
Carcasses of the birds, including gadwall (4), purple moorhen (3) and large teal (4) were seized from him. Three others, allegedly involved in poaching, however, managed to escape from the spot, the DFO said.
"We saw four persons picking up dead birds from the lake during our regular patrolling. The poachers had killed the birds earlier by using nets. When we raided the area, three of them managed to escape from the spot," ranger Tangi Sarat Behera said.
Bird poachers become active in the Chilika lake in Odisha with thousands of winged guests arriving in the blue lagoon to escape the severe winter in their native places.
Since the poachers are active in the lake, the wildlife division has taken up several steps to prevent the poaching.

"We have set up at least 19 camps in the entire lake with deployment of over 50 forest personnel to keep constant vigil on the poaching activities," he said. Besides, police forces were also deployed in Sorana area, DFO said.
The government has banned entry into the 15.53 sq km sanctuary area of Nalabana, inside the blue lagoon without permission of the authorities. The entry ban was imposed to ensure the safety of the birds.
