Accusing the ruling BJD in Odisha of unleashing violence on its political rivals, a BJP delegation, led by Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan, today met Home Minister Rajnath Singh, seeking his intervention.
Claiming that at least 10 persons were killed during and after the recent civic polls in the state and the police were not doing anything to prevent such incidents, Pradhan told Singh that the rising cases of attacks had become a matter of concern, a statement from the BJP said.
The delegation also took up with the home minister the case of a tribal woman, who was allegedly brutally attacked for voting for the BJP in the civic polls. The woman had submitted a memorandum in this regard to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent Odisha visit.
Another delegation, led by BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra, met National Commission for Women Chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam, seeking her intervention in the tribal woman's case. The NCW chief said she will send a delegation to Odisha to ascertain the facts related to the incident.
"The rising attacks on political opponents by the BJD have become a matter of concern. At least 10 people have been killed during and after the panchayat elections in Odisha. Political violence in such a scale was never seen before in the state," Pradhan said.
The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Petroleum and Natural Gas alleged that as the BJD's support base was "shrinking", it had turned "violent", and sought the home ministry's intervention.
The delegation that met Singh comprised Odisha BJP general secretary Prithviraj Harichandan and party state secretary Lekhashree Samantsinghar, besides Pradhan and Patra.
