The BJP today accused the Biju Janata Dal government in Odisha of playing the role of an escapist by adjourning the assembly sine-die about a fortnight ahead of its schedule.

Instead of allowing discussion on problems of farmers and other burning issues the BJD government adjourned the House sine-die, BJP Odisha unit president, Basant Panda told reporters here.

"Though the winter session of the assembly was scheduled to conclude on December 30, the government got it adjourned sine die yesterday. It adopted the path of an escapist to evade questions on burning issues," he said.

The lawmakers were keen to discuss a number of issues pertaining to the interest of the state and its people, but the government was apparently not prepared to face criticism, said Panda, who is also an MLA.

It is unfortunate that the government chose to skip discussion on problems faced by the farmers, many of whom have committed suicide recently allegedly due to crop loss caused by pest attack and unseasonal rains, he said.

Issues relating to the youth, who are hit by acute unemployment, and women would have been discussed by the members had the government allowed the House to run as per the schedule, Panda said.

"However, the BJD Government must realise that the people are not going to allow it to escape. They want an explanation from the government about its non-performance during the last 18 years," he said.

Asserting that BJP would fight for the rights of all sections of the people, Panda said the party would stage demonstrations near the collectorates in all the districts from December 20 to 22 to step up attack on BJD regime.

The party would also ensure that the huge money collected as penalties from erring mines owners are properly utilised for the benefit and development of all categories of people in the state, the BJP leader said.
