Against the backdrop of Sonia Gandhi's meeting with Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, BJP today accused Congress of trying to divert the attention of the voters from development issue to "communal" politics in the Lok Sabha polls.

"Congress has accepted defeat in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. The party is promoting communal politics out of frustration," BJP spokesperson Vijay Shankar Shastri told reporters here.

Apparently referring to Gandhi's meeting with Shahi Imam on Tuesday, Shastri said, "By seeking votes from hardcore communal forces, Congress supremo has encouraged the communal forces in the country."

While on the one hand, Modi is trying to raise the issue of development and good governance all over the country, on other side Congress is trying to divert the attention from the development to communalism politics, he charged.

Posing a question to Gandhi, he said, "We want to know from Congress president that how long the politics of 'fatwa' will continue. It has become clear that Congress has clearly joined the communal forces. The party's real image has been exposed."

He charged that Congress wanted to make communalism versus secularism politics as main issue at the hustings.

"Congress has abandoned the issue of development and veering towards communalism versus secularism politics. They want to make communalism versus secularism as the main issue in the elections," Shastri said.
