The BJP today accused Opposition parties of conspiring to defame it ahead of crucial state assembly elections by resorting to lies over the OROP issue and said similar attempts were made before elections earlier as well.

It said the Congress "cheated" ex-servicemen in the name of OROP during the 10 years of the UPA rule while the Modi government fulfilled its commitment by implementing it after coming to power.

With the Opposition targeting the government following the suicide of an ex-serviceman as he allegedly did not get due OROP benefits, BJP accused Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal of doing politics over a dead body.

"Rahul Gandhi is in so much frustration with the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he is doing politics over dead bodies be it of a student or an ex-serviceman.

"The Opposition leaders are defaming the government as part of a conspiracy by resorting to lies. This happens every time there are elections around," its National Secretary Shrikant Sharma told a press conference.

He said the government had constituted a committee to look into certain anomalies following the OROP's implementation and it has submitted its report. In two months, its recommendations will be executed.

BJP has said anywhere between 55-56 lakh ex-servicemen have benefited from the OROP decision while there are only 1 lakh of them who have got less than what they should get.

Congress is practising low-level politics over the matter and it is a sinking ship, Sharma alleged, noting that it barely alloted Rs 500 crore in the fag end of its tenure for the OROP.

"Congress only cheated the ex-servicemen as it did not even go into details of the OROP's budgetary requirement."

Targeting Kejriwal, he said he did nothing to deal with his numerous MLAs facing serious criminal charges but is now politicising a death to target BJP.
