Atul Shukla (30) was shot dead by the assailants equipped with country-made fire arms at his residence in Naurangabad late last night, they said.

Shukla had recently contested local body polls for Lakhimpur nagar palika membership from Gangotri Nagar ward, police said.

A case of murder in this connection has been lodged at Kotwali police station against five persons.

Meanwhile, protesting the incident, party workers and leaders, including BJP district president Lokendra Pratap Singh, today held a demonstration demanding stringent action against the killers.

SP Rajendra Singh assured the BJP leaders to arrest the accused within two days, following which they called off their agitation.
