The BJP is blazing ahead in Assam winning 40 seats whose results were declared so far and is leading in 21 others dashing Congress' hopes of returning to power for the fourth straight term.

BJP allies too kept up their winning spree with AGP bagging 10 seats and leading in four, while BPF won nine and lead in three others.

The allies have therefore a total score of 59 and are ahead in 28 seats. BJP had last time won only five seats, while AGP had 10 and BPF 12.

The ruling Congress' bid to return to power for a record consecutive fourth time was dashed as it managed to win only 19 seats and was leading in six others.

The performance of AIUDF the main opposition party in the outgoing assembly was dismal with the party winning only seven seats so far and leading in six others. Its chief Badruddin Ajmal, an MP, himself lost to Congress candidate Wajed Ali Choudhury in South Salmara.

BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal registered a comfortable win in Majuli(ST) defeating sitting Congress MLA and former minister Rajib Lochan Pegu by a margin of 18923 votes.

Another star winner of BJP is its state election convenor and a former powerful Congress minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who defeated Congress rival Niren Deka by a record margin of 85,935 votes in Jalukbari constituency.

Outgoing Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi too was leading comfortably in Titabor by 17152 votes over BJP Lok Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tassa.

AGP President Atul Bora defeated sitting Congress MLA Arun Phukan by 40,193 votes in Bokakhat seat, while former two-time party Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta was ahead over his Congress rival Suresh Bora by a slender margin of 4558 votes in Baharampur.

Former Union Minister Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar has been defeated by BJP's Chakradhar Gogoi by 4744 votes.

Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi barely managed to retain Sibsagar seat by winning by a mere margin of 542 seats while PWD Minister Ajanta Neog retained the Golaghat seat and Agriculture Minister Rakibul Hussain was also leading in his Samaguri constituency.

Among the prominent Congress ministers of the outgoing cabinet who have lost so far are Social Welfare minister Gautam Roy, forest minister Etuwa Munda and Culture Minister Bismita Gogoi. Other ministers Sarat Barkotoky, Siddeque Ahmed, Sumitra Patir, Chandan Sarkar, Ajit Singh, Basanta Das and Girindra Malik are trailing behind their rivals in their respective constituencies.
