BJP candidate Vinod Agarwal today emerged victorious in the mayoral by-elections here, retaining the post held by his late wife Bina Agarwal by a convincing margin.

Agarwal secured 66,535 out of the total 1,36,000 votes cast, with Samajwadi Party rival Raj Kumar Prajapati coming in second with 30,760 votes.

An independent candidate came in at third position with 18,750 votes while Congress' Anand Mohan Gupta could only secure 6,830.

The polls, held on August 3, witnessed poor turnout as only 24.5 per cent votes were cast.

Former mayor Bina Agarwal had died of a heart attack in May this year during her second tenure. Her husband will now complete the remainder of her term which is slated to end next year.
