In a statement issued here, former BJP President Rajnath Singh said, "Destruction of the 200-year-old Sufi heritage shrine of Dastageer Sahib is an outrageous incident which has shocked everybody who believes in peace and harmony."

He demanded an impartial enquiry into the burning of the shrine and to locate the cause behind this "unfortunate and shocking incident".

Singh said the Kashmir Valley has attracted 6 lakh tourists this season and the pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Amaranth has just begun.

"Therefore, the government should take into account all these factors while inquiring into the incident. The positive and peaceful atmosphere in the Valley and the state of Jammu and Kashmir has always been a matter of great concern to all of us," Singh said.

He maintained that the Dastageer Sahib shrine has been a symbol of unity and harmony for the devotees.

"The government should strive to ensure that such religious and devotional symbols are properly protected," he said.

The former BJP chief appealed to all communities to practise restraint and ensure peace and harmony in the state.
