BJP today urged the union territory government to initiate immediate steps to implement the December 15 order of the Supreme Court directing all state governments to ensure closure of liquor shops along national and state highways.
Local BJP President V Saminathan in a release said the apex court had specifically mentioned that the shops should be shut with effect from April 1 this year.
Saminathan said that Puducherry was among the States accounting for a larger number of road accidents and most of the cases including fatal mishaps were due to drunken driving.
He urged the government to initiate steps to enforce the court order.
