The BJP today demanded an apology from Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for Congress MLA Nilamani Sendeka's controversial comments on Union Minister Smriti Irani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, besides his arrest.

"Apology from Sendeka is not sufficient because he is not an ordinary man. He is a senior leader and a former minister. Congress has done an unpardonable mistake. So the chief minister should apologise in front of the people of Assam," Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal told reporters here.

He also demanded the arrest of Congress workers, who had allegedly attacked BJP supporters protesting in front of Congress headquarters Rajiv Bhawan here during the day.

BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma said the party would initiate legal steps and demanded immediate arrest of Sendeka for the derogatory remark.

The incident, he said, was not an isolated case and was "designed by Tarun Gogoi and APCC President Anjan Dutta".

"Moreover, Sendeka has not apologised yet. He has only withdrawn his statement. He has in fact attacked the media for reporting his comment," Sarma added.
