Rajasthan BJP today expelled a newly-elected ward member for contesting the mayor's election against the party's official candidate.

Surendra Singh Shekhawat, a councillor of Ajmer Municipal Corporation (AMC), has been expelled from the party for six years for gross indiscipline, a party spokesperson said today.

Going against the party line, Shekhawat today contested the election to the Mayor's post which he lost to BJP's official candidate Dharmendra Gehlot in a lottery, he said.

BJP has won in 31 of 60 wards in AMC while Congress won 22 and seven went to Independent candidates.

After a tie with 30 votes each, Gehlot was declared the winner in a lottery, a spokesman of the Rajasthan State Election Commission said.
