Criticising West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her tirade against the demonetisation of high-value currency notes by the Centre, the BJP today said her opposition was an "alibi to save the crores of money" the TMC leaders had allegedly siphoned off in ponzi schemes.
"Today Mamata Banerjee is talking about a financial emergency and about the suffering of the poor people. But, where was she and her party when 17 lakh people of the state were cheated by ponzi scheme companies. Several TMC leaders were hands-in-glove with them," BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh told PTI.
He alleged that Bengal under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regime had turned into a "safe haven for jihadis and Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) racketeers".
"We all know that Bengal is a safe haven for jihadis and FICN racketeers. The FICN is being routed from the Indo-Bangla border in Malda, Murshidabad to the rest of the country. Why was she (Mamata) silent then? What did she do all these years to stop this network?," the BJP leader asked.
"The TMC is reacting so much because it knows that all the money of Saradha scam has turned into useless papers after the scrapping of the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes and that is the sole reason for the opposition to this noble idea of unearthing black money," Singh said.
Dubbing the Centre's demonetisation move as the "black policy of the black government", Banerjee today visited banks and ATMs in the city to witness the "hardship" faced by the common people and demanded withdrawal of the decision.
She said she was "not averse" to work with the CPI(M), besides other parties such as the Congress, SP, BSP to fight against the "anti-people" Modi government which had imposed an "undeclared emergency" on the country.
