"When the process to set up projects have not started even after 18 months of signing the MoUs then why this extension? The decision raises questions over the intention of the government's campaign against corruption," BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak told reporters here.

He alleged that extension of time period would benefit the private developers and result in loss to the people.

"When Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav himself has mentioned problems of coal linkage in his speech in Vidhan Sabha then what was the point in extending the time of MoU?" Pathak questioned.

He alleged that giving more time to private developers would not only delay the projects, but would also result in cost overrun -- the burden of which would ultimately be passed on to consumers in the form of higher tariff.

"The party demands that in the interest of the people of the state, the government should reconsider its decision, invite competitive bids to set up power projects," he said.

The Uttar Pradesh government today extended time of agreement signed with private developers for setting up thermal power projects in the state for a maximum of 18 months.
