BJP leaders today gheraoed five police stations in Lucknow as they kickstarted their campaign to corner the Akhilesh Yadav government over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

The gherao is part of their nine-day campaign during which they will gherao all police stations in the district.

"In the state capital, BJP workers today gheraoed Ghazipur, Madiyon, Alambagh, Gomti Nagar, Naka under its campaign that will continue till Jul 16", BJP district President Mukesh Sharma said.

Sharma alleged that criminal activities were on the rise in the state and that the Samajwadi Party government was "patronising" unscruplous elements and "hesitating" to take action against them.

"There has not been a single day when incidents like snatching, murder, rape have not happened and yet due to the patronage of the state government, the police is either not acting or have been slow to act," said Sharma.

Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party has dismissed BJP's agitation as a political gimmick.
