The Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda decided to set up the new commission (Gho Samrakshana Ayoga) to ensure protection and health of these animals.
"Through this Gho Samkrashana Ayoga, the government will protect the existing breeds, take up research on developing new breeds, provide better health care and protection," Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri, told reporters here.
While the Animal Husbandry department was performing these tasks as of now, he said there was a need for setting up of such a body.
The government has already provided clarifications sought by the Centre on its Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill, 2010, Kageri said.
The legislation, passed by both Houses, making cow slaughter a cognisable offence with imprisonment upto one year
And fine ranging between Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000, has not yet got the President's assent.
