BJP today welcomed a Gujarat court's ruling that upheld clean chit given to Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 Gujarat communal riots, and said the judgement was on expected lines.

"We welcome the Ahmadabad Court's judgement on Narendra Modi...We had expected the judgement," BJP President Rajnath Singh told reporters here.

"We were always confident that he is totally clean and today's ruling has proved it," Singh said.

"Narendra Modi is our Prime Ministerial candidate and there is no controversy surrounding him," he said.

In a major relief to Modi, a Metropolitan Court rejected the protest petition filed by Zakia Jafri, a riot victim, against the clean chit given to him and others by the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team in the post-Godhra communal violence.

Earlier, the BJP leader visited the memorials of RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and its second chief M S Golwalkar and paid tributes to them.
