In a scathing attack on Ghulam Nabi Azad for his remark that what was happening in Jammu and Kashmir was the "Gujarat model", BJP on Wednesday alleged the Congress MP lacked "sense of responsibility and maturity" to react to such a sensitive issue.

"We disapprove Azad's statement that what was happening in the state was the 'Gujarat model'. It is most unfortunate," BJP's state spokesperson Balbir Ram Rattan said.

"It is just one instance displaying the hollowness, lack of sense of responsibility and maturity to react or make statements on sensitive issues and that too from none other than a leader of the stature of Azad," he said.

"It is highly unfortunate that when the valley is on the boil on account of Pakistani machinations and when all parties ought to have a united stand to restore peace in the valley, almost the entire leadership of Congress in Jammu and Kashmir is in a rat race in criticising and running down the efforts of the government and security forces to calm the situation," he said.

"Today this BJP government has brought the situation in Kashmir, which had normalised, back to the 1990s (when militancy was at its peak) because of its wrong policies... What is happening in Jammu and Kashmir is the Gujarat model. May God save us from such models," Azad had said.
