CPI(M) politburo member Prakash Karat today alleged that the newly elected BJP-IPFT government in Tripura was trying to suppress opposition parties through violence.

Karat today visited Jirania, Khayerpur, Ranirbazaar and Mandwai in West Tripura district where the ruling party workers allegedly attacked members and offices of opposition Left parties.

"This new government is trying to suppress the opposition parties through violence. There is not a single party office which is open and functioning in the areas that I have visited today," he claimed.

Some of the party offices were torched, some were looted and ransacked and a in some cases attempts were made to capture them, the former CPI(M) general secretary said adding that the party would not tolerate attacks on democracy.

"The picture is same in other parts of the state," Karat told reporters at the CPI(M) state headquarters here after visiting the violence affected areas.

Party workers, who are terrorised by attacks in different parts of Tripura, would be reunited and damaged offices would be restored and re-opened shortly, Karat said.

The BJP-Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) combine came to power last month in a landslide victory ending the 25 years of Left rule.
