A BJP leader was arrested for allegedly beating up a doctor after he accused him of carrying out illegal construction adjacent to his hospital, following which some leaders of the party held a protest.

The BJP leader Brijbhan Singh, who is a zila panchayat member, was arrested yesterday and later released on bail.

Superintendent of Police R B Singh said Dr Hemant Kumar Singh had objected to Brijbhan Singh's construction adjacent to his hospital in Sukhpura township, saying that it was illegal.

Hemant Kumar Singh complained that when Brijbhan Singh got to know about his objection, he barged into his hospital and beat up some people, police said.

They said the leader was arrested after the doctor filed a complaint in this regard.

Later in the day, BJP leaders, including two MPs Ravindra Kushwaha and Bharat Singh and MLA Upendra Tewari, staged a dharna before the Sukhpura police station on the Gorakhpur-Ballia Road, alleging that police action was one-sided.

The dharna ended late in the night after the police assured the protesters of impartial action in the case and release of Singh on bail.

SP Singh said action would be taken after an inquiry into the case.
