Adarsh Alphons, a New York based artist and son of BJP leader Alphons Kannathanam, has been nominated for the 2015 CNN Heroes award for providing free art classes to schoolchildren.

Adarsh Alphons who heads a nonprofit outfit ProjectArt Inc, has been nominated with nine others for the 2015 CNN Heroes award.

His organisation provides free art classes to school children in New York. The group holds classes in libraries and the children exhibit their art in galleries at the end of each semester.

ProjectArt has expanded from a branch in Harlem in New York in 2011 to 11 libraries throughout the city.

"The group has reached roughly 1,000 children," Kannanthanam, BJP national executive member and a former IAS officer, said here today.

On receiving the honour, Alphons said, "I believe art is essential to a well-rounded education because it lets a child learn things that they wouldn't learn through other fields".

The BJP leader Alphons Kannathanam earned the monicker 'Demolition man' when he demolished illegal buildings and reclaimed land worth crores of rupees while he was the Commissioner of Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

CNN Hero award is awarded every year to those eminent personalities who make outstanding contributions in issues related to social, political, human rights, and health matters.
