BJP leader seeks memorial for freedom fighter

BJP national secretary H Raja today urged the state government to construct a memorial for freedom fighter Neelakanta Brahmachari at his native village Erukkur in this district.

He was speaking after paying tributes to the revolutionary freedom fighter and founder of Bharat Mata Association on his 128th birth anniversary at Erukkur.

Neelakanta Brahmachari was sentenced to eight years imprisonment in connection with the murder of then Tirunelveli District Collector William Ashe in 1911 by his disciple Vanchinathan.

He had spent another 10 years in jail for participating in the freedom struggle.

Neelakanta Brahmachari was closely associated with legendary poet Subramania Bharathi, V O Chidambaram Pillai and trade union leader Singaravelar.
