A BJP MLA has charged UP government officials with red-tape and corruption and threatened to sit on a fast unto death if action was not taken to ensure proper utilisation of flood-relief funds.
Surendra Singh, a first-time MLA from Bairia constituency, alleged the state government officials did very little to improve the situation of more than 1.5 lakh people affected every year by the flood in Ganga and Ghaghara rivers.
The BJP MLA, staging a protest, has slammed the officials for having "negative mindset" as no work was started.

"The UP government has approved Rs 29 crore for flood relief operations," he said.
Singh said he had met senior departmental officials, ministers, and even Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in this regard but nothing has moved forward so far.
The BJP MLA also threatened to sit on a hunger strike from May 24, if work does not start in the coming week.
