Delhi BJP legislators today sought Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung's intervention in the early appointment of the Lokayukta, the post for which has been lying vacant since November 2013.

Vijender Gupta, head of BJP's legislative unit in the Assembly and two other MLAs called on Jung in this regard.

"As per Constitutional requirement, office of Lokayukta cannot remain vacant for a period exceeding six months. But here, there has been a vacancy since November 5, 2013 after then Lokayukta Justice M M Sareen demitted office.

"We told Jung that even Delhi High Court had observed the urgency of appointing Lokayukta at the earliest in its order dated September 26, 2014 in a matter," Gupta said.

He who was accompanied by two other party MLAs O P Sharma and Jagdish Pradhan during the visit. Gupta reiterated it is shocking that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his party AAP, which claims to be champions of Lokpal-Lokayukta movement, are "deliberately" sitting over the issue.

"It appears Kejriwal is intentionally avoiding a Lokayukta keeping in mind blatant violation of norms and laws by AAP Ministers and MLAs," Gupta alleged.
