The BJP unit of Mizoram's Chakma Autonomous District Council staged a protest in front of the council's office in Chawngte to protest against Chakma Autonomous District Council (Land and Revenue) Rules, 2019.
Agitators set fire to the copies of the Rules on Monday, a statement issued by state BJP unit said.
"There are certain provisions in the Rules which are against the interest of the residents of the area. The BJP sees it a policy of the executive committee to snatch people's lands," the statement issued on Tuesday said.
The BJP said there were no land lease and ceiling provisions in the CADC Land Revenue and Settlement Act, 2002 which safeguarded the lands of the residents of the area.
The council's executive committee headed by Chief Executive Member RM Chakma of the Mizo National Front passed the Rules on August 21 during the monsoon session of the council with 17 votes in favour and seven votes against it, the release said.
"All seven opposition BJP members of district council voted against the Rules as the party found it to be a threat to permanent residents of the district council," it said.
