BJP's Asha Jaiswal was today elected as the new Mayor of Chandigarh.

The posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, too went into BJP's kitty as the two party councillors were elected unopposed.

Rajesh Gupta was elected as Senior Deputy Mayor while Anil Dubey became the Deputy Mayor, Chandigarh BJP President, Sanjay Tandon informed.

"In the (Municipal Corporation) House of 36 (including nominated councillors), Asha Jaiswal got 31 votes while one abstained. Four votes were bagged by the opposite group (Congress)," he said.

Tandon said that the recent victory of the BJP in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation polls was a "curtain raiser" before the February 4 Assembly polls in Punjab.

"The victory of the SAD-BJP combine will be replicated in Punjab," Tandon said.

About BJP's recent victory in the Municipal Corporation polls here, Tandon said "people voted overwhelmingly in favour of BJP. Now the onus is on us to to deliver on the promises we have made to the public."

Notably, three weeks back, decimating Congress, the BJP-Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had swept the civic polls and attained absolute majority in the MC.
