Mumbai Congress today said BJP's decision to withdraw from the election for Mumbai Mayor's post was a complete U-turn from its earlier stand of targeting the Shiv Sena over the issue of corruption and transparency.

"(Maharashtra Chief Minister) Devendra Fadnavis's decision is a complete sell-out by the BJP and the Chief Minister has surrendered before the corrupt regime of Shiv Sena (in BMC) which he had targeted during the civic poll campaign," Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam told PTI.

Decks were cleared for the election of Shiv Sena candidate as the Mayor of Mumbai after the BJP today announced that it will not contest the mayoral poll slated for March 8.

Nirupam said even though Shiv Sena had bagged the highest number of seats, it did not have the mandate to control the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

"BJP has insulted those who voted against the Shiv Sena," he claimed.

Congress, which bagged 31 seats in the recently held BMC polls, has fielded Vithal Lokhare in the mayor poll.
