In the wake of the police arresting nine persons who allegedly engaged in religious conversion, the BJP today demanded the Telangana government explain what steps it is taking to check such incidents.

The opposition party also said the government must tell what norms they have in place to ensure unregistered shelter homes and orphanages do not operate in the state.

"The BJP questions the government and also demands an explanation by the Home Ministry of Telangana as to what are the actions they are taking...

"What kind of enforcement guidelines they have to ensure that illegal and unregistered shelter homes and orphanages do not operate, which actively are converting Hindu young children into Islam and Christianity," Telangana BJP spokesperson Krishna Saagar Rao said in a statement.

He demanded the state government issue a white paper on the orphanages and homes operating without licences.

Nine persons were arrested yesterday for allegedly converting children from poor families in Telangana to Islam under the pretext of providing them free education, food and shelter here, police said.

Police rescued 17 children in age group of 4-15 years, including seven girls, from the premises of an unrecognised school in Moula Ali area on a complaint of the Child Welfare Committee.
